In Navy tradition, a Shellback is a sailor who has crossed the Equator during their deployment—a nautical milestone that dates back centuries. When a sailor crosses the Equator for the first time, they transform from a “Pollywog” (a rookie, a newbie, an untested seafarer) into a Shellback through an elaborate, often hilarious, and sometimes messy initiation ceremony aboard their ship.
