Chapter 9: Sweet Surprises and Subtle Balances
October 21st: Venice, Florida (Sweetest Day Weekend)
Paul had been rehearsing this moment in his mind for days, but nothing compared to the real thing. As he and Christy strolled along the quiet, moonlit stretch of Venice Beach, the waves gently lapping at their feet, he finally felt like everything had come together. His Sweetest Day surprise—a romantic dinner, a bin of Xite Milk Chocolate, and now, a peaceful walk—had unfolded just as he’d hoped. Christy’s smile had been the cherry on top, and all the football distractions of the past week seemed to fade into the background.
“You really pulled out all the stops,” Christy said, her eyes twinkling as she finished the last piece of chocolate. “I was starting to think football had totally taken over, but this… this is perfect.”
Paul grinned, feeling a sense of accomplishment. “Hey, I can be thoughtful sometimes. Gotta keep you guessing.”
Christy laughed, nudging him playfully. “Well, mission accomplished. I didn’t see this coming, but I’m definitely glad you didn’t forget Sweetest Day.”
Paul squeezed her hand. “I could never forget. Tonight, it’s all about you.”
Back at Christy’s house, they cozied up on the couch, basking in the glow of a successful evening. Paul kicked off his shoes and grabbed the TV remote, ready to unwind. As he flipped through the channels, Christy disappeared into the kitchen and returned a moment later, holding two vibrant red cans.
“What’s this?” Paul asked, eyeing the cans in her hands.
Christy grinned, popping one open. “It’s Cantrips D9 Cola—I grabbed them from Tri-Healthy last week. Thought tonight would be the perfect time to try them out.”
Paul took the can from her, turning it over in his hands. The bold red design with sleek lettering definitely caught his eye. “Delta-9 cola, huh? I’ve heard about these—supposed to help you relax without knocking you out. You thinking of turning this into a new Sweetest Day tradition?”
Christy laughed, settling in next to him. “Maybe! I figured it’d be a fun way to end the night, especially since you’ve been balancing football stress with planning this whole surprise. This should help you chill without worrying about missing scores.”
Paul raised his eyebrows, intrigued. “Alright, I’m in. Football-free cola? Sounds like it’s worth a try.” He cracked open the can and took a sip, surprised by the smooth, refreshing flavor. “Okay, this is actually really good.”
Christy winked. “Told you. It’s the perfect combo—fun and relaxing. Plus, it’s cola. Who doesn’t love that?”
As they sipped their Cantrips D9 Cola, the conversation flowed easily, and Paul felt a calm settle in—a contrast to his usual post-football jitters. The subtle relaxation of the Delta-9 infusion helped him unwind, allowing him to stay in the moment with Christy without the usual distractions buzzing in his head.
“So,” Paul began, glancing at her with a smile, “I know I’ve been a little distracted lately with football and work. I’m trying to find a better balance—like tonight. This whole Sweetest Day surprise was my way of showing that I’m still all in.”
Christy smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. “I know you love football, and I don’t mind that. It’s just nice when we get time like this, where it’s just us.”
Paul took another sip of his cola, nodding. “Agreed. And hey, maybe we can make this a regular thing—Sweetest Day, Halloween, whatever. We find ways to keep it fun but also chill. Especially with these,” he said, holding up the red can with a grin.
Christy giggled. “I like that idea. Speaking of Halloween, I was thinking we could host a small gathering—nothing crazy, just a few friends, some snacks, and a chill vibe.”
Paul perked up. “I’m all for that. Especially if we have more of these colas on hand. And I promise—no sneaking off to check scores.”
Christy smirked. “I’ll hold you to that.”
The next morning, Paul woke up feeling surprisingly refreshed, the evening’s relaxation still lingering in his body. As he shuffled into the kitchen, he found Christy already up, brewing coffee.
“Morning,” he said, stretching as he reached for a mug. “Thinking about the party?”
Christy smiled. “A little. I’m excited about hosting, but I also want to keep it laid-back. Maybe we can set up a bonfire, throw in some festive decorations, and of course, stock up on more Cantrips D9 Cola. It’ll be perfect for a mellow Halloween.”
Paul nodded. “Sounds like a plan. And honestly, last night convinced me—this cola’s a game-changer. If we keep the party small and have a couple of those on hand, we’ll have the most relaxed Halloween ever.”
Christy leaned against the counter, a playful smile on her face. “Good, because if you sneak off to check football scores, you’ll definitely need more than one of those to calm you down.”
Paul laughed. “Alright, alright. No scores during the party. Just friends, fun, and a little bit of relaxation.”
As they sipped their coffee and chatted about the party, Paul felt a sense of contentment. He knew football would always be a part of his life, but now he was learning to balance it with the things that mattered most—like nights spent with Christy and the little moments that brought them closer.
With a few cans of Cantrips D9 Cola and a commitment to keeping things balanced, this fall was shaping up to be one of their best yet.
